Joseph Petzval se výpočtem objektivu zabýval již počátkem čtyřicátých let 19. století, tedy v téže době, kdy se rodila fotografie jako taková. Fotografie pořízené s objektivem Petzval jsou charakteristické svou ostrou kresbou, výraznějším barevným podáním, působivým bokehem i rafinovanou vinětací a malou hloubkou ostrosti. To jej v kombinaci s ohniskovou vzdáleností 85 mm činí ideálním pro fotografování portrétů.
